FGV Comunicação Rio and professor Maria Carolina Medeiros introduce partnership to produce feminist podcast ‘Não te Empodero’

The podcast focuses on female socialization and began recording in a studio at the school

The professor at the School of Communication, Media and Information at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV ECMI), Maria Carolina Medeiros, is the presenter and founder of the podcast ‘Não te Empodero’ (‘I do not empower you’), which is running its 5th season and has around 2 thousand plays per episode. The main topic in the podcast is female socialization, an issue that is also the object of the professor’s doctorate research. New episodes are released every Tuesday on Spotify and discuss the main topic in relation to issues happening at the time.

Currently, in partnership with FGV ECMI, the professor has been using the School’s podcast studio with support for editing the material. She is also supported by data from the DAPP Lab, the School’s social media monitoring laboratory, to prepare some of the episodes. According to Maria Carolina, being in an academic environment rings a new dynamic and relevance to the development of the podcast: “The opportunity to discuss such an important topic as the elucidation of female socialization within a school at Fundação Getúlio Vargas is a clear indication that the school’s board supports this issue”, she said.

Female socialization is an umbrella term that can be applied to several topics such as relationships, financial issues, and female rivalry; however, it is mostly related to situations that permeate the inequality related to stereotypes defined for the female gender and considered to be “women’s things”. The professor’s podcast questions these topics in episodes lasting around half an hour, with academic references, listener stories and discussions on current issues.
