The School of Communication, Media and Information at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV ECMI) participated in Rio Innovation Week, the largest technology and innovation event in Latin America, which happened from October 3 to 6 at Píer Mauá. Authorities, celebrities and representatives from the technology and innovation market, as well as the public in general, were present at the School’s booth.
Notable visitors were the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Luciana Santos, German consul Dirk Augustin, and the Secretary of Science and Technology of Rio de Janeiro Tatiana Roque. In the event, students and professors interviewed Gabriela Prioli, a lawyer and TV presenter, Vinícius Wu, the Undersecretary of Science and Technology of Rio de Janeiro, João Pedro Paes Leme, a founding partner of Play9, and other attendants.
“This volume of activities, initiatives, talks and content shows the importance of acting as a society to think about solutions in technology, within the digital sphere, for numerous types of issues in areas such as the economy, health and education”, said FGV ECMI’s undergraduate program coordinator Renata Tomaz.
Professor Anna Bentes participated in the panel ‘The cognitive impact of screen addiction and the algorithmization of thought’, together with Daniel Becker, a doctor, Eduardo Guedes, a professor and founder of the Delete institute, and the moderator AD Junior, general director of AD Junior Mídia.
“We talk a lot about algorithms but we often don’t know what they are. They are responsible for what we see, but also for what we don’t see on social media, operating based on the mass collection of data that is processed and becomes knowledge for each users on the network”, explained the professor during the panel.
Anna also recorded a podcast on the topic. The professors Alessandra Maia, Beatriz Pinheiro and Renata Tomaz also recorded podcasts about the metaverse and data culture.
The booth
The FGV ECMI booth provided interactive activities represented by each of its labs. With the Innovation Cube, the Games Lab, Immersive Realities and Artificial Intelligence, the public could visit a 3D laboratory environment with VR sets and test digital games developed by the team.
In turn, the DAPP Lab – our laboratory for monitoring social media data – monitored the repercussion of the event on social networks and presented the results. Lastly, the Media Lab – our audiovisual content lab – covered the event through images, interviews and photos at the booth that could be printed for visitors.
The undergraduate students in Digital Communication also helped cover the event and presented their projects developed within the School.
